A shopman in the employ of Mrs Brandy - a red-headed man of an uncertain and nervous temper. It is Toby Smith who brings to his employer's attention the sudden strange appearance of twenty-five golden guineas in the cash-box, magically placed there by the gentleman with the thistle-down hair so that Mrs Brandy may pass them on to Stephen Black. It is also Toby who runs after Stephen to present him with a silver diadem, apparently under the impression he is giving him the hat he has forgotten and left in the shop. (His confusion is no doubt an effect of the enchantment imposed by the Gentleman.).
