Hugh Torel was a twelfth-century Master of Nottingham. He was a magician who sought to abolish a Nottinghamshire fellowship of female magicians although his daughter, Donata Torel, was a member of the group. Hugh Torel's efforts were nearly successful. However, the women of the fellowship eventually abandoned their homes and families to live in the forest; they obtained the protection of Thomas Godbless, who was a more powerful magician than Hugh Torel [25].

There is an alternate, and probably untrue, story concerning a magical ring Hugh Torel was said to possess [25].
