Messrs. Holgarth and Pickle were two magicians, and apparently authors of the Curiose Observations upon the Anatomie of Faeries, a work of which it seems Mr. Norrell possesses the only surviving copy. It contains references to their dealings with the fairy Master Fallowthought. Mr Norrell describes our authors as "an unsavoury pair - more criminal than magical"[1]. We need not however take his verdict as absolute: Mr Norrell is never over-generous in his judgments of other magicians.

No more is known of this "unsavoury pair"; but their names suggest they were Northern Englishmen, and the antique spelling in the title of their book suggests they may have flourished sometime between the late 16th and 17th centuries.
