A northern quarter of Venice, once the home of artisans and of industry, especially iron-working. Architecturally it is rather dull and impoverished. The Jews of Venice have lived here from the 16th century, within the gated part of Cannareggio quaintly called the Ghetto. It is here that Mrs Delgado, who is partly of Hebrew descent, is charitably afforded a home[52].
