Grace Adieu [°] is a village in Gloucestershire where Rev. Henry Woodhope was formerly rector. While there he formed an ]unsuitable attachment to a Miss Parbringer, the niece of a gentleman in those parts. Fortunately during a visit he received from his brother-in-law, Jonathan Strange, Mr. Woodhope was rescued from his entanglement [LoGA].

[°] possibly from the French Grace à Dieu, meaning
1. Thanks to God (something happened); or
2. Grace to God.
