Grace Adieu °is a village in Gloucestershire where Rev. Henry Woodhope was formerly rector. While there he formed an unsuitable attachment to a Miss Parbringer, the niece of a gentleman in those parts. Fortunately a timely visit from his brother-in-law, Jonathan Strange, rescued Mr. Woodhope from his entanglement [LoGA].

[°] Possibly from the French Grace à Dieu, meaning
1. Thanks be to God (something happened); or
2. By the grace of God.
