Thaddeus Hickman (1700-38) was the author of a biography, The Life of Martin Pale. Mr Norrell alludes to a description found in Hickman of the King's Roads: "Hickman calls it a vast house with many dark passages and great staircases. Hickman says that within this house there are stone bridges spanning deep chasms and canals of black water flowing between stone walls - to what destination or for what purpose no one knows[35]." This description may well be taken from the life of Pale; or it may be from another, otherwise unknown work by Hickman held only in Mr. Norrell's library at Hurtfew.

Hickman also somewhere describes a spell to create a labyrinth [66].
