A seneschal in bygone days was a trusted official in the household of a sovereign, or a great noble, to whom the administration of justice and entire control of domestic arrangements were at times deputed.

In the case of William of Lanchester, seneschal of John Uskglass, it appears that in his master's sudden absences he took upon himself the administration of the entire kingdom[49].
