Salamanca

Salamanca is a city in Spain, the scene in 1812 of a battle between French forces and those of the British and their Peninsular allies under Lord Wellington. Though he appears to have taken no direct part in the battle Jonathan Strange aided the allied victory to some extent by sending magical illusions of what appeared to be avenging angels to swoop down upon the defeated French. The illusion had some success in completing a rout already begun, though cooler heads among the French were soon undeceived [31].
