Mrs Redmond is the wife of the rector of S----------- in Gloucestershire. Of middle years, she is of a sedate and home-loving disposition, and owns a black cat. She kindly receives Jonathan Strange when he arrives in her husband's absence to pay a call on Mr Redmond's curate, Henry Woodhope (though in point of fact the real purpose of Strange's visit is to see Woodhope's sister, Arabella, whom he hopes to persuade to accept him.) It is a chance question of Mrs Redmond's that leads Strange impulsively to assert his intention to study magic, and then to attempt - successfully - his very first spell[22].
