Hettie Pleasance - it is not clear whether her given name ought to have been Harriet or Hester - was the widowed landlady who took such motherly care of Mr Segundus when he first came to York and lodged with her at Lady-Peckitt's-yard. By her own admission she was a famous baker of bread[2]. She also attempted some simple home remedies for minor complaints[2]. A Mrs Cockcroft of the George Inn is a friend of hers[3].
