Mr Hart or Hunt was a gentleman and an elderly member of the Learned Society of York Magicians. (The uncertainty as to his name is due to the fact that John Segundus could never exactly recall it; and to the lack of other records about him, he not having bequeathed his fame to posterity.) He held the common view that, while theoretical magic was a noble art, practical magic had low connexions and should be avoided [1]. By contract with Gilbert Norrell, he and many of his fellow Society gentlemen ceased to be a magician as of February, 1807 [3]. (See The stones of York.)
