In Madrid, the renowned Spanish artist Francisco Goya, who had already taken a famous likeness of the Duke of Wellington, made a sketch in red chalk of Jonathan Strange. It is a sketch of Strange seated on the ground, surrounded by the seventeen dead Neopolitans; some regard him hungrily, some have 'expressions of supplication', while 'one is putting out a finger to stroke the back of his hair.' This romantic composition is evocative of a well-known renaissance painting.
