After Mrs Lennox becomes John Segundus's benefactress and supports his scheme of opening a madhouse at Starecross Hall his personal fortunes evidently improve, and whereas in 1809 he is so poor as to wear a jacket with frayed cuffs[23] by 1817 he keeps a manservant, Charles. It is Charles who informs his master of the strange arrival of Stephen Black and the gentleman with the thistle-down hair in Starecross, whither they have come in pursuit of Lady Pole[68].
