A Spell of Pathfinding is, according to Jonathan Strange, an absolute prerequisite for anyone attempting to enter upon the bewildering labyrinth that is the King's Roads[48] - otherwise one is in danger of becoming hopelessly lost. Essentially it is a spell of guidance which permits the traveller to find his way safely back to his point of origin. (It may perhaps be similar to the ancient spell Strange uses when tracing his path into Lost-hope, which causes a "line of glittering light" to appear at his feet, to shew him the way.[54]. And it is perhaps some similar spell which Strange carefully provides for his wife, to enable her when at last she escapes Lost-hope to gain the safety of the Greysteel household in Padua.[68])
